Burn Injury Treatment and Recovery

The Miami Burn Center’s multidisciplinary team is world-renowned with a reputation for saving patients with even the most severe and life-threatening burns.

Overview

The Miami Burn Center has been a focal point of care and rehabilitation for thousands of children, adolescents, and adults for more than 40 years. In fact, critical burn cases from Florida, the Caribbean, Latin America, and beyond are referred to the Miami Burn Center on a regular basis thanks to our team’s peerless expertise.

The Miami Burn Center, located inside of Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, provides a multidisciplinary team approach in the care of pediatric, adult, and elderly patients from the moment they are brought to our facility. Highly-specialized burn trauma surgeons and nurses in the trauma resuscitation area provide patients with immediate treatment to reduce the risk of infection and they are then placed on a pain management regimen. Patients with severe and life-threatening burns are then transferred to the Burn Intensive Care Unit.

Occupational and physical therapists provide rehabilitative services both at the bedside and in a special gym for patients with burn-related injuries. Therapists guide exercises in weight training, muscle strengthening, resistance, endurance, range of motion, and activities of daily living.

Care and Support for Burn Injuries

After patients are released from the Miami Burn Center, many are transferred to the Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at UHealth/Jackson Memorial, where they are evaluated to identify their specific needs and to determine their most effective treatment program. Patients with burn injuries may require a long rehabilitative period and are involved throughout this process, becoming as independent as possible in mobility and self-care activities. Extensive support is provided to address both physical and emotional pain issues.

The Miami Burn Center wants to give burn survivors the strength, support, and understanding to engage the start of their new lives as survivors by offering a bi-weekly support group for those 18 years and older.

This support group is a place where burn survivors can socialize and discuss issues of interest, as well as express concerns or issues they may be facing related to their injuries.

Useful topics are discussed each month and guest speakers are invited to aid in the understanding of the various stages of burn injury, rehabilitation, and recovery. The setting is casual and we encourage a fun atmosphere that is welcoming to all who attend.

Admissions and Referrals

When a patient is referred to the Miami Burn Center, all clinical care is provided for patients. Initial resuscitation and wound evaluation determines if patients are admitted to the intensive care unit, the non-critical burn care area, or have treatment as an outpatient.

The medical team provides surgical and non-surgical wound care in the intensive care unit, the operating room, and in the specialized general floor area. Specially trained nurses provide daily care, while experienced occupational and physical therapists in the specialized rehabilitation area provide burn rehabilitation for inpatients and outpatients.

This ensures continuity of care by a constant team while in the hospital and until the wounds are mature.
