Getting Your Life Back

How our skilled rehabilitation team will help you on your recovery journey.

If you have been treated for a serious condition, such as a stroke, spinal cord, or traumatic brain injury, our skilled rehabilitation team will build a comprehensive plan to get you on the right track for recovery.

Recreation Therapy

Recreation therapy uses recreation as a treatment modality to address cognitive, physical and social behavior, and emotional deficits. Through goal-oriented and skill-based community outings, patients have the opportunity to incorporate and practice the skills gained in their various rehabilitation therapies in daily activities.

They have the experience of learning from real-life situations, under the guidance of professional recreational therapists. Each outing is specific to the individual person’s needs and abilities. Activities include sports, yoga, field trips to parks and restaurants, swimming with dolphins, and learning how to maneuver on public transportation.

Brain Injury, Neuro, Stroke, and Caregiver Support Groups

Patients and families dealing with the emotional challenges of a serious injury that requires rehabilitation can find comfort knowing they are not alone. In these guided support groups, families can share their experience in a safe and confidential setting, while fostering strength and building connections with other patients facing some of the same challenges.

Community Outreach

UHealth Jackson Rehabilitation Care specialists provide educational and injury prevention programs to thousands of South Florida elementary school children, teenagers, and adults each year. As volunteer leaders in educating the community, Jackson’s physicians, nurses, and therapists play an active role in several programs.

Burn Survivors Support Group

The Miami Burn Center wants to give burn survivors the strength, support, and understanding to engage the start of their new lives as survivors by offering a biweekly support group for those 18 years and older.

This support group is a safe place for burn survivors to socialize and discuss issues of interest, as well as express concerns or issues they may be facing related to their injuries. Useful topics are discussed each month and guest speakers are invited to aid in the understanding of the various stages of burn injury, rehabilitation, and recovery. The setting is casual and we encourage a fun atmosphere that is welcoming to all who attend.

Educational Programs

Merrick Educational Center Hospital/Homebound Instructional Program provides age/grade appropriate education by Miami-Dade County Public Schools teachers while the student is in the hospital, and then seamlessly arranges for a teacher to come to the student’s home after discharge.

Students will not be counted as absent in their home school and they will receive grades for work completed while entered into the H/H Program.
