Transplant Rehabilitation
Patients who are either awaiting organ transplantation or those recovering from transplantation may benefit greatly from rehabilitation therapy.
Overview
Prospective organ recipients who have been ill for an extended period may experience physical deconditioning and require pre-rehabilitation or “pre-hab” to get them physically strong enough for organ transplantation. This pro-active approach often aids in the recovery times and helps them achieve the most optimal outcomes following surgery.
Additionally, patients who participate in post-transplant rehabilitation are typically better prepared to transition back to their home setting at a higher level of independence, potentially placing less of a burden on caregivers and loved ones.
What’s Involved
Both pre & post-transplant rehabilitation involve physical therapy, which focuses on improving overall mobility, including the use of assistive devices as needed, such as walkers, canes, or wheelchairs.
It may also include occupational therapy, which focuses on helping patients perform self-care and hygiene tasks as well as a myriad of other daily living activities.
The overall goal of rehabilitation for pre & post-transplant patients is to allow them to regain their maximum level of independence, enhance their quality of life, and return home as safely as possible following their surgery.
